Director of Technical Transformation (Interim, 6 Month Contract)

Reports to: CTO & CPO

Contract type: Outside IR35, day-rate contract, 6 months

Location: London, up to 2 days a week on-site

Start date: Monday 28 September

About the role

Our client, a well-established UK media business, is going through significant

organisational and technical transformation. They need an interim technical leader to

provide senior architecture direction while their permanent architecture ownership

model beds in.

This is a hands-on role. You'll make real technical decisions yourself, not just

oversee others making them. It's also people-facing: several engineering teams are

moving into new disciplines, most notably Agentic Engineering, and you'll support

them through that as a visible, present leader.

What you'll be doing

• Own technical direction and decision-making across the transformation: architecture, agentic engineering, technical governance

• Lead end-state and transitional architecture using live projects

• Provide interim architecture leadership and support the client's architects until the permanent model is resolved

• Set and uphold engineering standards through the transition

• Support engineering teams retraining towards Agentic and Design

• Engineering with hands-on mentorship

• Establish agentic and design engineering as working practices: spec-driven delivery (spec, grounded generation, tests alongside code, automated checks, human sign-off), what "production-ready" means, and proportionate guardrails

• Close AI identity and access management skills gaps, and productionising

• LLM-powered applications, through embedded mentorship

• Own the technical handover to permanent leadership at the end of the engagement

• Work closely with the Interim Director of Process Transformation so technical and process change land together

• Provide technical governance for agentic and design engineering as those disciplines mature
  

What we're looking for

• Senior technical leadership experience with hands-on architecture credibility

• Experience developing end-state and transitional architecture for live, operating platforms

• Hands-on experience building agentic engineering practice from scratch

• Experience leading and supporting engineering teams through skills and role change

• Experience providing technical leadership and governance during organisational change

• A track record of clean handovers

• Strong communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders
